The Ombudsman’s legal authority to investigate complaints, and to recommend redress where necessary, is set out primarily in the Ombudsman Act, Chapter 5 of the Substantive Laws of Belize, Rev. Ed. 2011.
The original Ombudsman Act No. 7 of 1994 was amended by the Ombudsman Act No. 42 of 1999 and was brought into effect by the Ombudsman Order, Statutory Instrument No. 19 of 1999.
The Ombudsman is also given legal authority to review decisions of public bodies regarding requests for access to public documents under the Freedom of Information Act, Chapter 13 of the Substantive Laws of Belize, Rev. Ed. 20011.
